Marangu route also nicknamed as the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest, well-established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are bunk beds each at Mandara, Kibo and Horombo Huts. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets
with buckets of water at Kibo Hut.
Many people prefer Marangu, because it is considered to be the easiest route on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However, the route has a lowest Summit rate because of the short time frame of altitude acclimatization and the Psychological effect that the route is easy and that cause poor preparation of a climber. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is, unfortunately, less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and
descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.
Day 1
This is a 5 days Marangu route itinerary but it can be made in 6days with One more day
at Horombo hut for acclimatization. You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro Airport and
transferred to a hotel in Arusha/Moshi town, then followed by briefing from your mountain
guide and rest on BB accomodation plan.
Days 2: Picked from a Hotel to Kilimanjaro Marangu gate – Mandara Hut.
Take a short drive from Moshi or Arusha town to the Kilimanjaro Park Gate (1,830 m.) lies at
the edge of Marangu village, with attraction of many small coffee and banana plantations. After completing the entrance formalities, you climb up through attractive and unspoiled forest to reach the clearing bossing Mandara Hut (2,700 m.). The volcanic remains of Maundi Crater are nearby, and make a good afternoon excursion. An alternative is to rest and enjoy the natural forest. There is a rich birdlife at the huts and monkeys are often seen as well. 3-6 hours walking to Mandara Hut for accommodation (B,L,D)
Days 3: Leave Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut(3720m).
You will be staring with a steep ascent through forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland and, in clear days, you will have wonderful views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The climb continue steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heather and occasional stands of groundsel, to eventually reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). This area in many times covered by clouds as the site is close to the glaciated dome of Kibo, and there is a real sense of being above the clouds. 3-6 hours walking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut.
Days 4: Ascending from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut Through Desert Saddle.
You will climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain changes to screed and there is a really sense of high altitude wilderness. Normally you will be reaching Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by midday and the afternoon is free for Summit determination. The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb around midnight! 4-6 hours trekking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut.
Days 5: A trek from Kibo Hut to Summit, and down to Horombo Hut.
Here is where your Head-torch will start to be useful at about 1 a.m. so that you can be up at Gillman’s Point by dawn time. The initial climb is steep over loose volcanic screen, but there are some well-graded zig-zag and a slow but steady pace will have us up to Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in about six or seven hours. You will rest there and spend some time for sunrise memorable photos. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m.), passing close to the spectacular glaciers that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent is surprisingly fast and we return to Horombo Hut for the night. 10-15 hours trekking from Kibo Hut to Gillman’s Point.
Days 6: Kilimanjaro Marangu Retrace through the Tropical Forest.
A descent is with a pleasant moorland walk to Mandara and then a beautiful forest walk to the National Park gates to Arusha or Moshi town. The greenness and lushness of the forest is quite a stunning contrast to the summit day, and it really makes you realize how varied the scenery on Kilimanjaro really is (3-6 hours walk).
