The Umbwe Route is the most direct ascent route and the most strenuous of all Kilimanjaro routes. It is
one of the least climbed routes on Kilimanjaro, which makes it appealing. The first two days you hardly
see any climbers until the trail merges with the Machame Route. The trek starts through the thick forest
on the southern slopes of the mountain. It rapidly gains height and affords you little time to acclimatize
properly. That’s why we highly recommend climbing this route in 7 days and allowing enough time to
acclimatize before the final push. On this route we start our summit ascent at midnight
Day 1
You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro Airport and transferred to a hotel in
Arusha/Moshi town then followed by briefing from your mountain Guide and rest on BB
accomodation plan.
Days 2: Climbing from Kilimanjaro Umbwe gate to Forest Caves (3,000m).
After breakfast, you will be picked from your hotel by a 4×4 vehicel to Umbwe mountain
gate(1,400m) here you will start your climbing and with porters carrying our equipment,
you set off up a good track and into dense jungle to reach a campsite at Forest Caves
(approx 4-6 hours).
Days 3: Climbing from Forest Caves to Baranco Camp (3,900m).
On this day you will continue through forest with a good chance of seeing Colobus
Monkeys before rearing up on to a steep, narrow ridge with deep valleys on either side. At
3,000m, you emerge on to high moorland and the entire character of the trek changes.
Baraco Camp is reached in mid-afternoon (5-6 hours).
Days 4: Trekking from Baranco Camp to Karanga Camp (13,300ft / 4,050m).
On this day, you will have a challenge to overcome the Baranco Wall, which is 600 ft high
and takes you to an altitude of 4,244m. From the top, the receding Heim Glacier on
Kilimanjaro’s south face is clearly visible. Your route continues eastwards underneath the
Decken and Rebman Glaciers to Karanga valley Camp.
Days 5: Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (15,090ft / 4,650m).
The steady trek from Karanga valley Camp, takes 3-4 hours to Barafu Camp (4,650m),
from where you will make your summit attempt in the early hours of a new day..
Days 6: Climbing from Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft / 5,896m) to Millennium Camp.
After tea and snacks around midnight, you will start an ascent on the steepest and most
demanding part of the mountain. You will be heading to Stella Point on the Crater Rim by
sunrise after about 5-6 hours. From Stella Point, it takes another hour to reach Kibo Peak –
the highest point on the crater rim and the true summit of Africa. You descend to
Millennium Camp (3,820m). This is by far the toughest day of the trek and normally takes
between 11 and 14 hours.
Days 7: Descending from Millennium camp to Mweka Gate.
After breakfast, you will have a 3-5 hours walk down to Mweka Gate, where you will be
awarded the Kilimanjaro Certificates and then Cerebrate with the whole climbing team and
picked by our vehicle to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha town.
